Students with an interest or potential in science, especially those underrepresented in science participated in LEAP, a 3-week summer course in pharmacology, followed by 7 additional visits (Saturdays) to Duke the following year. During the Saturday visits, students worked on research projects that they developed themselves with help of Duke faculty. Students presented their research at the NC Student Academy of Science annual meeting and at the NC Science Fair. At least 52 students won awards, including two $40,000 scholarships. Applications to LEAP will not be distributed for the next year (2009).
