» Students in LEAP-2006 Class Win Medals for Science Research

April 1, 2007 - High school students in the inaugural LEAP class won 9 medals the NC State Academy of Science meeting held in March at the NC School of Science & Math. The medal winners presented their research projects they conducted while in the LEAP program at Duke. In addition, one student won 1st place at the Regional Science Fair and 2nd place at the State Science Fair. This student was honored with a $40,000 scholarship!

» RISE Receives Grant to Develop Innovative Science Course in Infectious Disease

November 9, 2006 - Duke University was one of 22 colleges and universities around the nation selected to receive an award for implementing projects to improve science and math education, the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement (NCSCE) announced today. The recipients at Duke are in the RISE office in the Department of Pharmacology & Cancer Biology. The RISE development team includes its Director, Rochelle Schwartz-Bloom, a RISE Fellow, Nicole Kwiek, an AB Duke undergraduate scholar, Joseph Babcock, and a high school student at Durham School of the Arts, Senmiao Zhan. The team is developing a course in infectious disease and treatment called "Superbugs, Science, and Society". The RISE team will be aided by an advisory group of high school teachers in local health science high schools. These teachers will field-test the course in their schools in Fall, 2007. The NCSCE, funded by the National Science Foundation, is home of the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER) project, which creates opportunities for faculty to develop rigorous interdisciplinary approaches to teaching basic science and strengthening students’ capacities to become engaged citizens. » LEAP (Launch into Education About Pharmacology) at Duke

April 1, 2006 - Duke University's RISE (Raising Interest in Science Education) office in the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, has just received a Student Science Enrichment Award from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to develop and implement LEAP (Launch into Education About Pharmacology), a science enrichment program for 10th and 11th graders. LEAP, which targets students in the Piedmont area (Durham, Orange, Wake, Person, Chatham, and Alamance counties), presents a pharmacology course to provide students with a context that excites them about science, instills science literacy, and inspires them to consider careers in science. The 3-week summer course includes a multi-structural approach, including lectures, inquiry-based experiments, field trips, multi-media, and writing. During the following year, students meet with Duke faculty and design a research project addressing pharmacology concepts or a controversial issue in pharmacology that is in the news. Students present their research projects at the NC Student Academy of Sciences annual meeting and the NC Regional Science Fair. More »

» Duke TIP Pharmacology for High School Students

June 13, 2005 - RISE and the Department of Pharmacology & Cancer Biology launch the Duke TIP course in Pharmacology for 9th and 10th graders who excel in science. The intensive 3 week course was given in June and featured lectures, discussions, debates, and inquiry-based experiments.

» Rochelle Schwartz-Bloom Wins Science Educator Award from the Society for Neuroscience

May 1, 2005 - Rochelle Schwartz-Bloom was presented with the $5000 Science Educator Award at the Annual Grass Foundation Lecture at the 2004 Society for Neuroscience meeting in October. The Science Educator Award recognizes an outstanding neuroscientist who has made significant contributions to educating the public, including K-12 teachers and students, about neuroscience.

January 1, 2005 - A Duke News release highlights the Pharmacology Education Partnership (PEP) at Duke. Developed by Rochelle D. Schwartz-Bloom, a professor of Pharmacology and Myra J. Halpin, a chemistry teacher at the NC School for Science and Math, the pair have found that students learn biology and chemistry better when their teachers use the PEP modules. More »
